  • Talk:Mono on external drive

Does the install process put anything on the 0LPC image itself, or does it just add files to the USB stick? In other words, if you stick this USB stick in a different 0LPC image and have Mono still run? -JH

If Mono can be installed anywhere, could it be installed in the a home directory of the 0LPC itself? That is, if you did not have a use for the content which will be shipped with the OLPC, could you remove that content and use the room for Mono? -JH

This method, (if you mount the image to /opt and choose the default values), will install everything on the USB stick. We are looking at ways of reducing the size of the install so that you can have both the OLPC software and Mono. It seems to me that if you wanted to get rid of the software that was already on the machine, you may as well use a different distro entirely. AndyPalmowski 09:44, 27 June 2006 (EDT)

I don't think so. I can think of several reasons why the official distribution is the one use, but all of them pale next to the primary one. That is, that this distribution will be tuned to let the machine sleep in between tasks, kind of like alphasmarts do. for example, the cursor may not blink. To be clear, I and not (yet) talking about "the software", but rather, the "content" (e.g. 20 megs of wikipedia).--Hatton 21:19, 27 June 2006 (EDT)

Just to clarify, I've just tested the external install image with a fresh OLPC image, and after setting the environment variables it all works. (Speaking of which, I'll have to find a way to make said variables 'stick' after a reboot). So, in answer to your question - yes, this method would let you install Mono on a USB drive using one OLPC (or maybe even a regular PC) and then use the same USB drive on a different OLPC.
